The Progam
Maranatha Bana’s program is based on the multi-modal approach (the inclusion of
available speech, natural gestures, manual signs, graphic symbols and picture communication
symbols) in order to develop and stimulate maximum potential of the child with a
disability. Combined with this approach is AAC Systems. Augmentative and Alternative
Communication Systems are used to facilitate a person’s interaction with those around
him/her. AAC Systems can be categorized into aided (require the use of external
devices or equipment e.g. the use of a graphic symbol on a communication board for
the child to point to) and unaided (require no additional equipment e.g. facial
expressions and gestures) systems, to give the person more effective access to communicate
in different situations. We know that people learn by actively participating in
the environment around them. By using this approach it is hoped to facilitate the
active participation of people who cannot do so by speaking.
